Graduate Visa Australia – Subclass 485
Applying for a Graduate Visa in Australia is an excellent strategy for gaining valuable work experience in the country after completing your studies. Once granted, it allows you to stay in Australia with full work rights, from 2 to 6 years, depending on your qualification and in which city you have studies. If utilized strategically, it could potentially lead to permanent residence in the future.
About the Australian Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)
The Graduate Visa 485 is a temporary visa designed for students who have recently graduated with a qualification from an Australian institution. It consists of two streams:
Graduate Work Stream: This stream is intended for students who have completed a 2-year Diploma or Trade Certificate closely related to their occupations. Their nominated occupation must be listed on the high-demand list – the Medium and Long Term Skills Shortage List (MLTSSL). The Graduate Visa under this stream is usually granted for up to 2 years
Post Study Work Rights Stream: This stream is available for graduates of Higher Education Courses such as Bachelor Degrees, Master Degrees, and PhDs, regardless of which field they have studied in. Courses need to be of at least 2 years in duration.
The Graduate Visa granted under this stream is usually valid for a period ranging from 2 to 6 years, or even more depending on the qualification and region where the student graduated.
Graduates who have completed their courses in regional areas may be eligible for a 1 or 2-year extension. On top of that, starting from 1st July 2023, the Government has announced a new concession allowing a two-year extension for international graduates with select degrees in areas of verified skill shortage, mainly in Health, Education, Engineering, IT, and Agriculture.
This extension brings the total duration of the visa to:
• 4 years for Bachelor degree graduates
• 5 years for Master’s degree graduates
• 6 years for PhD graduates
